Artists wanted for student-led mural project
City of Fremantle 6 Dec 2024

The Our Voice | Our Mark project is supported by the City of Fremantle and Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.

The project will be led by young people in Years 10 to 12, in collaboration with their chosen artist in residence, to co-design and create a site-specific mural in a location yet to be revealed.

Western Australian based artists working within any arts practice and with proven mural painting experience are encouraged to apply.

The murals will be in the city centre and will aim to create a welcoming, vibrant streetscape for locals and visitors to pass through, explore and linger.

The mentoring aspect will strive to empower collaborators to share their stories and provide authentic and unique experiences for everyone who takes part, whilst engaging with the community through active citizenship.

The City of Fremantle’s Director of Creative Arts and Community Pete Stone said:

“Our Voice | Our Mark is an opportunity for artists, students and their educators to collaborate on a public art project that not only beautifies public space, but also encourages pedestrian connections across the city.

“The artwork is to be designed specifically for the site and be responsive to the historical, cultural, social and built environment, including consideration of surrounding buildings, businesses and activities.

“The concept will contribute to a distinctive sense of place, a fostering of community spirit, and have a wide audience appeal,” Mr Stone said.

The artists will be paid for their in-school residency, involving mentorship and preparations, as well as the installation and delivery of the public art.

The residency will be in Terms 1 and 2 of 2025, with the mural to be completed during a mass painting week in Term 3.
