Volunteers gathered at the Fred Moule Pavilion this morning to help pack 800 food hampers and make Christmas a little cheerier for locals doing it tough over the festive period.
The hampers were made possible thanks to the generosity of the Cairns community, which helped raise about $92,000 for the 2024 Mayor’s Christmas Charity.
Major contributions to the fundraising efforts were $20,000 donations from Bendigo Bank, Kenfrost Homes, and Rankin Sawmill.
The annual appeal provides hampers to families, the elderly, carers and other residents who might otherwise go without on Christmas Day.
Mayor Amy Eden acknowledged the generosity of the local community, who during a cost-of-living crisis had dug deep to help those doing it tough.
“This has been one of the most successful fundraising efforts since the charity was established,” Cr Eden said.
“It’s all about supporting those in need and ensuring that everyone in the Cairns region can experience the joy of the festive season, regardless of their circumstances.
“The hampers contain essential food items that make a significant difference for families facing hardship or isolation, ensuring they can enjoy a festive meal during what can be a difficult time of year.”
More than 100 volunteers helped pack the hampers at the Fred Moule Pavilion in the Cairns Showgrounds, ready for distribution by local charities and support agencies.
“Thanks to the volunteers who have put up their hands to help prepare, pack and deliver these hampers to people in our community,” Cr Eden said.
“I also want to acknowledge the support of the Rotary Club of Cairns Sunrise, officers from the HMAS Cairns, Brothers Rugby Leagues Club, Underwood Party Hire, the Cairns Show Association, Coles Cairns Central, Tropic Spirit Catering, and a host of other local businesses who are helping to pack and deliver these hampers throughout the city.
“I would like to also recognise the efforts of our media partners for their in-kind services and support.
“To everyone who has contributed to the appeal in any way, we thank you for generosity and wish you a very merry Christmas.”
