The Hobart City Council Planning Authority Committee has approved a major development application for a nine-storey mixed-use building at 25 Watchorn Street and 116 Bathurst Street, marking another milestone for the city’s vibrant growth.

Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds welcomed the decision, highlighting the City of Hobart’s strong track record in supporting development.

The approved development includes office and retail spaces, sustainable design features, and significant contributions to civic amenities.

The City of Hobart remains committed to supporting projects that deliver positive outcomes for both developers and the community.

The approved proposal is for a nine-storey mixed-use building with retail and office spaces, including parking for 16 cars, bicycle storage for 38 bikes, and end-of-trip facilities.

The design features sustainable elements like vegetative plantings on terraces and incorporates high-quality materials such as concrete, glazing, and timber battens.

The project involves the consolidation of titles at 25 Watchorn Street, minor works at 116 Bathurst Street for sewer infrastructure, and upgrades to the adjacent road reserve, including new parking spaces and kerb reinstatements.

The building will have a maximum height of 40.5m, a total gross floor area of 13,733m², and contribute $445,000 toward civic amenities.

Quotes to be attributed to Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds:

“This approval demonstrates our commitment to facilitating high-quality projects that benefit our community and economy.

“The City continues to approve about 98 per cent of all development applications, despite others saying otherwise.

“The facts show it is the cost of construction not the approval process that remains the biggest impediment to projects getting off the ground.

“This project, along with recent approvals for multiple dwellings on Barrack Street and a landmark commercial building at the former Spotlight site, reflects our city’s evolution as a dynamic and thriving hub.”
