Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) this week (December 10, 2024) endorsed a $50,000 sponsorship to help organisers stage the May 3-4, 2025 Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport Marathon.

Council approved the sponsorship at its December Ordinary Meeting following an application from event organisers, Gold Coast Events Management Ltd (Events Management Queensland).

The sponsorship confirms Council as the naming rights sponsor for the Visit Toowoomba Region 10km event to be staged on Sunday, May 4, 2025. For details, visit https://toowoombamarathon.com.au/10km/

TRC Community Development, Facilities and Tourism portfolio spokesperson Cr James O’Shea said Council was encouraged by the results of this year’s inaugural event in May, which attracted more than 1900 participants and delivered an economic return of more than $1.1 million to regional businesses.

Cr O’Shea said the organisers were confident the expansion to a two-day weekend of events in May 2025, including an altered Marathon route to reduce traffic disruptions, promised to build on the profile of the successful 2024 program.

“Forecasts show the expanded event has the potential to generate an economic return around $1.6 million for our Region. With the 2024 event delivering 3759 visitor nights as a single-day event, the two-day program will no doubt see this figure rise in 2025,” Cr O’Shea said.

“Nominations for the 2025 event opened in October this year and organisers are positive that more competitors will line up across the two-day 2025 program. Runners from interstate and other parts of Queensland accounted for 40% of competitors this year.

“We also had international runners from Malaysia and Singapore, which adds to the stature of the event.

“A review of this year’s event and consideration of residents’ feedback has resulted in a change to the Marathon route planned for Sunday, May 4, 2025. The 2025 Marathon course will visit Picnic Point once, unlike the two loops for this year’s event.

“This will allow roads on the southern and south-eastern sections of the course to be opened earlier than this year to minimise the disruption to surrounding residents and traffic movement.

“Residents and business operators along the 2025 course, and the wider community will be advised of the new traffic arrangements closer to the event and organisers will continue to liaise with the Police and other authorities.

“The race routes offer many vantage points to showcase the city’s garden image as part of a wider tourism effort to attract more entrants to the races, as well as to visit our wider Region.

“Running events like the Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport Marathon are not just about elite athletes. High-profile, mass-participation events such as this help to highlight the importance of healthy lifestyles in our community.

“With so many event categories to choose from, Council is keen to encourage as many members of our community as possible to get involved. There are opportunities for the business community to enter teams in the corporate mile relay, among other events, for the Saturday (May 3, 2025) family program at Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport.

“The Sunday (May 4, 2025) program includes the Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport Marathon, the ASICS half Marathon and the Visit Toowoomba Region 10km run.”

Gold Coast Events Management Ltd are the organisers behind the Gold Coast Marathon and Pan Pacific Masters Games, among other events.
