One of Benalla’s most cherished Christmas traditions has been given a refresh, thanks to the skilled hands and dedicated efforts of the Benalla Woodworkers Association. The iconic Nativity Scene, which has brought joy to countless families over the years, has undergone a
meticulous restoration, receiving a vibrant new coat of paint in preparation for the festive season.
Now proudly displayed at the Benalla Uniting Church in Carrier Street, the Nativity Scene holds a special place in the hearts of the community. Its presence has long symbolised the joy, hope, and togetherness of the Christmas season, making its restoration a meaningful gesture for residents and visitors alike.
Mayor, Cr Bernie Hearn expressed heartfelt gratitude to Sonya Casey and Dennis Ball from the Benalla Woodworkers Association for their contribution to preserving this treasured community decoration. She emphasised the importance of such collaborative efforts in enhancing Benalla’s cultural and festive traditions.
“This Nativity Scene is more than just a decoration; it’s a beacon of community pride and shared celebration,” Cr Hearn said.
“By restoring it to its former glory, Sonya and Dennis from the Benalla Woodworkers Association has ensured that this beautiful piece can continue to bring joy and inspiration to everyone who sees it. Their hard work is an example of what can be achieved when we come together as a community.”
The restoration process involved careful attention to detail, dedicating over 20 hours to ensure the Nativity Scene retained its charm while being rejuvenated for future generations to enjoy.
Cr Hearn encouraged residents to take the time to admire the restored Nativity Scene.
“Whether you’re passing through or visiting the Uniting Church, I encourage you to pause and reflect on the joy and sense of belonging this display brings to our community. It’s a wonderful reminder of the shared traditions that connect us all.”
While the Uniting Church is location for the Nativity Scene for Christmas 2024, the Council is hoping to gauge interest from other Church groups across Benalla Rural City to display the scene in future years.
The Nativity Scene has become a beloved part of Benalla’s festive identity. Its restoration is a testament to the enduring spirit of collaboration and care that defines the Benalla community.
This Christmas, the refreshed display stands as a proud reminder of what makes Benalla special — a community that treasures its traditions, supports each other, and takes pride in the symbols that bring everyone together. The Council warmly invites everyone to stop by the Benalla Uniting Church on Carrier Street, admire the handiwork, and share in the festive spirit.
