Liverpool City Council and the University of Notre Dame Australia have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to pave the way for the University to establish a strong presence in Liverpool’s CBD. After this move, four universities have a presence within a seven-minute walk of one another in the Liverpool CBD. They are Western Sydney University, the University of Wollongong, the University of New South Wales, and now the University of Notre Dame. Notre Dame offers a unique educational experience which enables more students to access higher education and pursue meaningful careers, while also supporting all students to both achieve excellence as individuals and contribute meaningfully to their community.
"This expansion is another major step towards transforming Liverpool into a major educational hub that serves the rapidly growing population of South Western Sydney,” said Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun. “It will also deliver economic benefits, both via student spending and because Deloitte has found every dollar invested in university research returns $5 to the economy.
“I regularly hear from the people of Liverpool that they want more opportunities to study and work right here in their own city, and don’t want to have to travel into Sydney for those things. That’s another reason I’m so excited by the MOU with the University of Notre Dame.
“We invite other institutions of higher learning to also come to Liverpool. While student population numbers in Eastern Sydney are nearly stagnant, out here we have a growth market. There will be an 84% increase in the number of higher education students in Western Sydney by 2050. That will be steep growth from 144,000 in 2023 to a new total of 264,000 students per year.”
“The population of Liverpool is also growing quickly and is due to increase by more than 100,000 to a new total of 350,000 by 2046.
The University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Francis Campbell, said, “The University of Notre Dame has had a small presence in Liverpool since 2022 thanks to our partnership with All Saints Catholic College. By expanding, with a greater presence in Liverpool, we will be able to bring the benefits of a Notre Dame education to many local residents.
“The University will provide spaces for learning, collaboration and will join our existing full campus in Broadway, Sydney, as well as in Broome and Fremantle. We chose Liverpool because it is a rapidly developing, culturally diverse city with a strong commitment to education. Liverpool is also home to one of Australia’s biggest and best regarded hospitals and a host of related research institutes and startups. That’s important because medicine and health are core areas of instruction for us.
“The University of Notre Dame will explore spaces for learning, collaboration, and community engagement. The MOU expresses our intention to strengthen our presence within Liverpool.”
The signing ceremony was held at Liverpool Civic Place
