Works are ongoing at the Cobra Creek crossing on Emerald End Road, after this section of road washed away during the 2023 Cyclone Jasper flooding event.
“It is great to see the recent progress being made at Cobra Creek crossing,” said Mareeba Mayor Angela Toppin.
After significant flooding in 2023, the crossing completely washed away and left over 100 residents cut off and without water service for several days.
“As a temporary measure, Council created a side track and one-lane bridge to restore access to residents,” said Mayor Toppin.
Earlier this year, the water main was reinstated, to ensure water security for those residents impacted at this location.
A large concrete base was recently installed at the crossing, and box culverts were added last week.
This week, the team will begin backfilling the culverts and move on to pouring the downstream headwall and wingwalls before the Christmas break – weather permitting.
The new design will create a structure better able to withstand the strong creek flows of future wet seasons.
Mareeba Shire Council is very grateful to receive assistance provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
“The team will continue to work on this project, weather permitting, until it is complete.
At this stage, the project will not be finished before Christmas, however it is expected to be completed early in the new year. We thank residents for their patience over the last 12 months as we work towards restoring the Cobra Creek crossing,” concluded Mayor Toppin.
