Smart water meters helping Capella residents take control

Posted on December 23, 2024

Council has rolled out a new smart water metering system in Capella, giving residents more control over their water use and helping to detect hidden leaks.

In 2024, 517 smart water meters were installed across the town. These devices allow customers to track their water usage in real time, helping them manage their consumption and make informed decisions about their water use.

‘Smart meters put the power back in the hands of our residents,’ said General Manager Infrastructure and Utilities Jason Hoolihan.

‘They can see exactly how much water they’re using and take action if something doesn’t seem right.’

The system has already proven its worth, with council’s water utilities team identifying unusual usage patterns that could indicate leaks. So far, 58 customers have been notified about potential leaks on their property, leading to repairs that have already reduced water consumption across the town.

To help residents understand and use the new technology, two community sessions were held in June at the Capella Cultural Centre. Attendees learned how to register their devices and make the most of the information now available to them.

‘This project is about empowering our community while also ensuring we use our water resources wisely,’ Mr Hoolihan said.

The smart water meter initiative is another step forward in council’s commitment to providing innovative, sustainable services that benefit both residents and the environment.
