Celebrate and stay safe this Australia Day

Federation Council anticipates large crowds at local parks and river reserves this Australia Day long weekend, as residents and visitors enjoy the warm weather and celebrate.

Federation Council Mayor, Cr Cheryl Cook said Council and the Federation Primary Prevention Team encourages everyone using public areas to have fun and celebrate responsibly.

“We want everyone to have an enjoyable and safe Australia Day,” Mayor Cook said.

“Police will be patrolling public spaces across Corowa and Mulwala throughout the weekend, focusing on areas like Rowers Park, the Lagoon, and both town centres. Additionally, the police boat will patrol Lake Mulwala and the Murray River on Australia Day. Anti-social behavior and excessive alcohol consumption will not be tolerated.”

Important Information for Residents and Visitors:

Alcohol-Free Zone: Bridge Road, Corowa from the Sanger Street roundabout to John Foord Bridge (including car park), will be an Alcohol-Free Zone for a 24-hour period, starting at 6am on Australia Day and ending at 6am on January 27th. Alcohol Prohibited Area: Rowers Park in Corowa will be an Alcohol Prohibited Area for the same 24-hour period. Staying Safe: Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and bring extra with you. Sun protection: Seek shade during peak sun hours, wear sun-protective clothing (shirt, hat), sunscreen, and sunglasses. Responsible alcohol consumption: Drink in moderation and look out for your friends. Water safety: Avoid alcohol before swimming. Always check water depth for safety and watch out for submerged objects. Glass-free zones: All Federation Council parks and public green spaces are glass-free zones.
