Dumped tyres and mattresses pollute our region – council urges community action

Posted on January 10, 2025

Council continues to combat the widespread issue of illegal dumping, especially of bulky items such as tyres and mattresses.

These items, often found along roadsides, in bushland, and around waste facilities, harm the local environment, pose health risks, and create cleanup costs that divert funds from essential community projects.

General Manager Communities, Adrian Burns emphasised the impact of these actions.

‘Dumped items like tyres and mattresses aren’t just unsightly; they leach harmful chemicals into the environment and require extensive resources to clean up,’ he said.

‘Illegal dumping is a burden that affects every resident.’

Illegal dumping is particularly concerning when it involves non-biodegradable items such as tyres and mattresses. These large items do not break down easily, and their disposal is costly and labour-intensive, impacting council resources that could otherwise enhance local services.

See It? Report It!    Residents who witness illegal dumping are encouraged to report it through council’s Snap, Send Solve or by contacting council directly.

‘Reporting helps us respond quickly and hold offenders accountable,’ added Mr Burns.

Providing details such as location, time, and photos allows council to manage and track illegal dumping incidents effectively.

With the community’s support, council aims to protect the Central Highlands’ natural beauty and reduce cleanup costs. For more information on proper waste disposal and how to report illegal dumping, visit the CHRC website here.
