Urban Greening Funding to Enhance Major Reserve

Published on 05 February 2025

The Town of Cambridge has secured over $150,000 from the Urban Greening Grants Program to plant new trees and understorey vegetation at Galup (Lake Monger), which will enhance biodiversity, reduce urban heat, and improve local amenity.

The funding – awarded through the Town’s successful Galup (Lake Monger) Greening Acceleration grant application – will contribute to the purchase of trees, understorey species, and the supporting services and materials needed for their installation, establishment, and growth.

The investment will deliver key proposals of the Galup (Lake Monger) Management Plan 2024-2034, including additional tree planting on the western side of the reserve, revegetation of underused turf areas, and new fringing vegetation along the southern lake edge to improve natural habitat.

Deputy Mayor Ben Mayes welcomed the funding, highlighting the Town’s commitment to tree protection and urban greening.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to increase tree canopy and improve biodiversity at one of the Town’s most treasured reserves,” Cr Mayes said.

“Planting more trees and restoring natural vegetation creates vital habitats for wildlife, cools our urban spaces, and enhances the visitor experience. We’re excited to work with our community to bring this project to life.”

Community groups, schools and businesses will have the opportunity to take part in the planting efforts, which will be held in May and June 2025.

The Galup (Lake Monger) Management Plan, endorsed by Council in August 2024, provides a strategic direction for projects and activities at the reserve until 2034. The Urban Greening Grants Program funding supports the Town’s broader commitment to tree protection, climate resilience, and sustainable urban development.

The Urban Greening Grants Program is delivered by the Town of Cambridge with the support of the WA Local Government Association (WALGA) and funded by the State Government of WA.
