The City of Rockingham welcomes the recent state government announcement that Expressions of Interest will soon be called for the development and operation of a new private marina at the intersection of Wanliss Street and Rockingham Beach Road.
With the second highest number of boat registrations in the Perth metropolitan area, the City has been advocating to the state government for many years for the development of an environmentally sound marina to meet current and future demand from recreational vessel owners.
Mayor Deb Hamblin said the proposed location had already received strong support from the community in previous consultation.
“Over the long history of the City’s efforts to get a marina development, we have twice gone to our community to get their feedback and gauge the level of interest in a marina. Both those community consultations, in June 2011 and March 2018, showed strong support for locating the marina at Wanliss St.”
“A marina at Wanliss St would be a catalyst for a wide range of development opportunities within the Rockingham Strategic Centre, including tourism and hospitality options which will bring a new level of vibrant activity to our foreshore precinct,” Mayor Hamblin said.
As the government’s announcement makes clear, Rockingham has long been identified as a prime site for a future marina given the demand for vessel accommodation. Accordingly, if the EOI process does not attract a proponent, the City trusts that the state government will make a commitment to deliver a marina at Wanliss Street as soon as possible to meet growing demand.
