Hannah Gillett, named Upper Hunter Shire’s Young Citizen of the Year 2025, embodies the qualities of leadership, dedication, and a strong connection to her community. A student at St Joseph’s High School Aberdeen, Hannah’s commitment to leadership flourished last year when she attended the Adelaide Leadership Summit. This experience not only expanded her perspective but also paved the way for a local Leadership Summit at her school, allowing her to foster growth and confidence in other young leaders.
The Australia Day Award has been a significant moment in Hannah’s journey, serving as a powerful reminder that no effort in the community goes unnoticed. “Receiving this award has impacted me immensely,” she reflects. “It has led to me finally realising how no acts go unnoticed in our communities and that people can receive the recognition they deserve, whether it is public or not.” For Hannah, the award reaffirms the value of humility, preferring to let her actions speak louder than words.
Looking ahead, Hannah is determined to pursue a career in Veterinary Science, with plans to study at university after completing her HSC in 2025. Her goal is to return to Scone as a cattle vet, contributing to the region’s renowned equine and agricultural industries. Her aspirations are not just about personal success but about giving back to the community she calls home.
For those who look up to her, Hannah offers a piece of advice drawn from her own experiences—stepping outside one’s comfort zone. “It seems such a simple piece of advice, but in reality, it can be daunting. Still, it is always worth it in the end. Keep trying, and one day you’ll look back and be proud of what you’ve accomplished.”
Hannah Gillett’s story is one of perseverance, leadership, and a deep sense of purpose. As Upper Hunter Shire acknowledges her achievements, her journey serves as an inspiration for young people across the region, proving that with determination and courage, even the boldest dreams can become reality.
