A special Council meeting was held today in relation to filling the vacant Councillor position, following the passing of Cr Kevin Davies last month.
As the vacancy occurred in the first twelve months after the last election, the Local Government Act 2009 (Qld) requires that Council decide whether a by-election be held, or the vacancy be offered to the runner-up.
“Today, Mareeba Shire Council has decided that a by-election should be held to fill the vacant Councillor position,” said Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin.
“We believe that the community should decide who sits on Council, not the Councillors. Our decision looked at several factors, namely the time since the last election, the results of that election and the cost of holding a by-election. After serious consideration, the holding of a by-election was seen as being in the best interests of the community.”
“The role of a Councillor is very important. They are a strong voice for the community and make decisions that have a direct impact on residents. Given that nearly a year has passed since the last election, we want the community to have their say in who represents them. Whoever the people choose will be welcomed to the team,” said Mayor Toppin.
Council will write to the Hon Ann Leahy, Minister for Local Government, to consider conducting a postal vote after only 35.5% of Mareeba Shire electors voted on election day in 2024. This would also bring down the cost of the by-election.
Further information about the by-election will be released as soon as it is available.
