The Georges River at Liverpool now has a state-first accessible kayak launch ramp, opening the river to local kayakers for the first time.
A joint operation between the NSW Government and Liverpool Council, the design makes the facility the first of its kind in New South Wales.
The launch platform meets Australian Disability Access Standards (AS1428) and the groundbreaking, innovative new design makes the facility the first of its kind in New South Wales.
Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun said the design has since been adopted by Maritime Services as its new standard for following facilities.
“The accessible kayak launching place on the Georges River at Light Horse Park in Liverpool offers significant benefits to the local community and environment,” Mayor Mannoun said.
“This initiative is part of a broader movement to create more inclusive and sustainable recreational spaces.
“The accessible kayak launching place is designed to cater to individuals with mobility impairments, providing a space where people with disabilities can easily and safely launch kayaks into the water.
“This is vital because it promotes inclusivity, ensuring that everyone, regardless of physical ability, has access to recreational water sports,” he said.
The accessible kayak launch site is the first of a series of upgrades that will culminate in the complete transformation of Lighthorse Park made possible through a combination of grants and community contributions and is proudly funded by the NSW Government in association with Liverpool City Council.
“Liverpool Council is grateful to the NSW Government for funding through the Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants and from the Department of Transport through the Boating Now program,” Mayor Mannoun said.
“The planning and development of a 5km kayak trail on the Georges River is underway, providing a basis for new community programs that allow for greater connectivity to the Georges River, attracting visitors to the foreshore, and activating this valuable resource.
“The Light Horse Park Redevelopment project is not just about upgrading a park; it's about enhancing our community's quality of life, promoting sustainability, and creating a space for shared memories and experiences,” the Mayor said.
