Media Response - Speed limit change

Published on 26 February 2025

The Advertiser is preparing a story on the trend of SA councils reducing speed limits and are approaching all the metro councils on this issue.

The journalist asked:

I understand Burnside lowered the speed limit to 40 km/h in parts of several areas in 2024. Would much appreciate if you could let me know:

Of any other speed limit changes your council has enacted or requested since 2019. Is your council considering any more speed limit cuts? If so, can you please provide details

Response attributed to CEO Julia Grant.

In late 2024 Council conducted two local area studies to understand parking and road safety, accessibility and liveability issues, concerns and opportunities in Eastwood and also in the area comprising Kensington Park, Leabrook, Tusmore, Beulah Park and Hazelwood Park.

Based on the result of these studies, Council will develop area specific Precinct Plans that highlights the actions Council intends to take to improve local transport safety, accessibility, and liveability.

The draft Precinct Plans will be considered by Council in the coming months.

Council’s City Master Plan also envisages the staged development of Precinct Plans for other suburbs throughout the City of Burnside. The local area studies for these may consider the appropriateness of further 40 km/h speed limit areas.

Any other speed limit changes your council has enacted or requested since 2019.

Following a 2023 community consultation process that supported speed limit changes, Council received approval from the state government in 2024 to change the speed limit to 40 km/h in six areas:

Rose Park, Dulwich and Toorak Gardens Beulah Park and Kensington Park (part – north of The Parade) Frewville, Glenunga and Glen Osmond (part) Kensington Park (part – south of The Parade) Kensington Gardens (part) and Magill (part – west of Penfold Road) Magill (part – east of Penfold Road).

A 40 km/h speed limit change was explored for Eastwood however this was not supported by the community as part of the 2023 community consultation.

No other locations have been enacted or requested since 2019.

Is your council considering any more speed limit cuts? If so, can you please provide details.

No further speed limit reductions have been considered.
