The Town of Cambridge has completed a $1.4 million upgrade to Sydney Cheek Pavilion in Floreat, significantly improving inclusivity, accessibility, and functionality for local sporting clubs and the wider community.
The facility, used by the Wembley Lacrosse Club in winter and Subiaco-Floreat Cricket Club in summer, has undergone extensive renovations to modernise changerooms, improve amenities, expand storage, and enhance spectator access.
A new UAT (universal accessible toilet) is now available for public use, and a compliant external ramp and ACROD (Australian Council for Rehabilitation of Disabled) parking bays have been added to improve accessibility between levels. The building’s structure has also been upgraded, including a renewed staircase, balcony deck, and ventilation systems to ensure a more comfortable and functional environment.
Mayor Gary Mack said the project delivered on the Town’s commitment to forming an inclusive and welcoming sporting culture.
“Sydney Cheek Pavilion is a hugely important facility for our local sporting clubs in the heart of Floreat. These upgrades ensure the pavilion meets modern standards, providing better access for female athletes, people living with disability, and the general patrons,” Mayor Mack said.
The project was supported by funding from WA Cricket through the Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries via the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund.
Mayor Mack said the investment reflected the Town’s Strategic Community Plan 2023-2033, supporting participation in community sports and ensuring equitable access to modern infrastructure.
“Sport and recreation play a key role in building stronger, healthier communities. By investing in quality, accessible facilities, we are creating spaces where everyone can participate and feel welcome,” he said.
With the upgrades now complete, sporting clubs have resumed using the pavilion, delivering long-term benefits for players, spectators, and the community.
