Protect against mozzies following heavy rain

Redland City residents are urged to check their backyards for possible mosquito breeding sites following heavy rain and localised flooding associated with ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

The heavy rain, coupled with warm temperatures, has provided ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes.

Redland City Council’s Mosquito Management Team has been checking known mosquito breeding sites and is conducting both ground and aerial treatments in response to elevated mosquito numbers.

Aerial Treatments are being conducted today and tomorrow (Friday and Saturday) in the following areas:

Wellington PointThornlandsVictoria Point.

Ground treatments have been conducted this week using backpack blowers, quad bikes and ATVs in the following areas:

ThornlandsCapalabaThornesideBirkdaleWellington PointClevelandVictoria PointRedland BayRussell IslandMacleay IslandKarragarra IslandLamb Island.

Residents cleaning up in the aftermath of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred are urged to protect themselves and their properties from mosquitoes by:

Wearing clothing that is long, loose-fitting and light in colour when venturing outdoorsApplying insect repellents (natural repellents can also be used) particularly to areas that are exposed and not protected by clothingUsing mosquito coils or plug-in insecticide burnersTreating normal flyscreens with UV stable insecticide surface sprayEmptying pooled water from pot plant bases, containers and tarpsMaintaining and chlorinating swimming pools.
