Kambalda West District High School (KWDHS) students had the opportunity to explore the impact of waste in their community during a special visit from Pergy Matsika, Manager of Waste Services at the Shire of Coolgardie. Invited by Year 7/8 Bush Rangers teacher Susane Hall, Pergy led an engaging session with Year 7 and 8 students, encouraging them to think critically about litter and its effects.
The session covered important topics, including what is considered litter, how it affects individuals and the environment, and the emotions associated with seeing waste in their community. Students reflected on the consequences of littering, fostering a greater awareness of their role in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
To wrap up the session, students were divided into groups and given the challenge of devising local waste solutions. They then pitched their ideas to their classmates, who had the power to approve or deny the proposals. While the students were initially quiet, they soon gained confidence and presented innovative and passionate ideas to address waste issues in their town.
Pergy praised the students for their enthusiasm and thoughtful contributions. “It was fantastic to see the students take ownership of local waste issues. They had some great ideas and weren’t afraid to share strong opinions on how to improve our community,” she said. The session not only educated students on waste management but also empowered them to become active participants in creating a cleaner and more sustainable future for Kambalda. Initiatives like these highlight the importance of community engagement in tackling environmental challenges and fostering responsible waste practices.
