Albany sportsmen and women were celebrated at the Wellington & Reeves Albany Sportsperson of the Year Awards last night, officially recognising the accomplishments of Albany’s local athletes.

The prestigious awards night honoured efforts and achievements from the 2024 calendar year, garnering 36 nominations across the four categories.

Athletes could be nominated for the Retravision Junior Sportsperson of the Year, Castlehow Senior Sportsperson of the Year, Sound Life Master Sportsperson of the Year, or the Wellington & Reeves Sportsperson of the Year.

All award entries were evaluated based on their level and intensity of their respective competitions, as well as their demonstrated individual performance and contributions to the local community.

Hockey talent Ben Blechynden was awarded the Retravision Junior Sportsperson of the Year after helping WA’s U14 Country Team to national gold, while also captaining his local side to a grand final win, earning Best and Fairest, Grand Final MVP, and contributing as both a coach and umpire.

Muay Thai rising star Shawah Jin was named Castlehow Senior Sportsperson of the Year for his achievements, including winning gold at the Muay Thai Australia Nationals, claiming multiple state titles, and being recognised as the Up-and-Coming Pro Fighter of the Year by the MTA WA panel.

Australian Rules Football legend Brett Hall won the Sound Life Master Sportsperson of the Year for his outstanding achievements, including representing Australia on the 2024 Ireland Tour and earning the Whitten Medal at the national championships.

Volleyball star Ryan Slater took out the top gong and received the Wellington & Reeves Albany Sportsperson of the Year Award for his exceptional contributions, including national selection for the 2024 Australian Volleyroos and a silver medal in the Australian Volleyball Super League with Perth Steel.

Mayor Greg Stocks congratulated the nominees and winners for their achievements.

“These awards shine a light on the incredible talent we have in Albany, across a wide range of sports and at every level,” he said.

“It’s inspiring to see so many athletes not only achieving excellence in competition, but also giving back to their clubs and communities.

“Congratulations to all of this year’s finalists and award winners — you’ve made Albany proud.”
