Exciting changes are on the horizon as Renew Charters Towers is set to bring life back to vacant spaces and foster a hub of creativity and innovation.
The Renew Charters Towers project is part of the Regional Place Activation Program (RPAP), initiated in partnership with Renew Australia and the Queensland Small Business Commissioner (QSBC), and aims to breathe new life into underutilised spaces.
By providing short-term, low-cost leases, the initiative enables local artists, entrepreneurs, and creatives to showcase their work, test business ideas, and contribute to local economic growth.
Mayor Liz Schmidt is thrilled to see this initiative come to Charters Towers.
“It is about unlocking the potential of empty shops and unused buildings, turning them into dynamic spaces that benefit both the local economy and the community,” said Mayor Schmidt.
The initiative will focus on revitalising Gill and Mosman Streets in Charter Towers, making it a more attractive destination for locals and visitors alike by activating empty spaces and giving local entrepreneurs the opportunity to shine.
As well as local entrepreneurs, creatives, and community groups, owners and agents of properties that have a vacant business space that fits the bill are encouraged to get involved.
Utilising vacant commercial spaces not only revitalises the streetscape but also increases the likelihood of securing long-term tenants, attracting interest from potential businesses and investors, showcasing the property’s potential while demonstrating its viability as a functional and desirable location.
By filling vacant spaces with creative enterprises, unique retail experiences, and cultural activities, it is hoped the CBD will enjoy increased foot traffic, encourage new investment, and foster a stronger sense of community pride.
“While this initiative is about temporary activation, the impact could be long lasting - bringing energy, foot traffic, and opportunity to the Charters Towers CBD,” added Mayor Schmidt.
