An exhibition exploring the symbolic and practical power of high-visibility materials will open at Albany Town Hall on April 17.
THE SHINING – Hi-Viz in Focus brings together artists from the Great Southern and Perth to reimagine the concept of high visibility, transforming their ideas into contemporary artworks.
Hi-viz clothing, once confined to construction sites and industrial zones, is now a widely recognised symbol of alertness and safety.
This exhibition considers how the meaning of these fluorescent colours shifts when removed from their usual context.
City Manager Arts and Culture Paul Nielsen said the exhibition invites a creative and critical lens on a material that has become part of the everyday landscape.
“By using hi-viz as both a concept and a medium, the artists challenge how we see and understand visibility in contemporary life,” Mr Nielsen said.
“This exhibition uses art to explore identity, safety, and contemporary culture through a material we’re used to seeing in very different contexts.
“It’s a playful but thought-provoking look at how materials linked to safety and work can take on new meanings through art.”
Artists working across diverse mediums will present work that challenges perceptions and encourages fresh thinking about everyday materials.
THE SHINING – Hi-Viz in Focus will run from April 17 to May 23 at Albany Town Hall. An artist talk will take place on Saturday, April 19 at 11am and a free community art activity will be held Thursday, April 24 from 10am to 11.30am.
