Following a comprehensive recruitment process earlier this year, Ms Burley was unanimously appointed by Council for her extensive experience in local government leadership, her commitment to regional communities, and her strong commercial and strategic planning background.
Mayor Jasmin Jones said she was thrilled to see Ms Burley step into the role.
“Today marks an exciting new chapter for Yass Valley Council,” Mayor Jones said. “Gayleen brings not only a depth of knowledge and experience in rural and regional service delivery, but also a genuine appreciation for the character and future potential of the Yass Valley. We’re confident she will be an outstanding leader as we navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead.”
Ms Burley has held senior leadership positions across northern New South Wales, most recently serving as Director of Place and Growth at Glen Innes-Severn Council. Her previous roles at Kempsey Shire and Port Macquarie-Hastings Councils saw her oversee key community assets and large teams, including responsibility for significant infrastructure such as airports, saleyards, and major cultural facilities.
Today, Ms Burley said she was proud to begin her five-year term with Yass Valley Council.
“It’s an honour to be joining the Council team and serving the people of Yass Valley,” she said. “I’m committed to working closely with the Mayor, Councillors, staff, and the community to ensure we maintain strong, sustainable services that reflect local needs and aspirations. Yass Valley is a region with so much potential, and I’m excited to get started.”
Council also took the opportunity to once again thank Ms Julie Costa, Director of Planning & Environment, for her leadership as Acting CEO over the past several months.
“Julie has done a tremendous job leading Council through a period of transition,” Mayor Jones said. “Her professionalism and dedication have set a strong foundation for Gayleen to build upon.”
