“After Council’s resolution earlier this year to support the Games, and months of planning in the lead up, the hard work is finally done. We are now ready to enjoy the Invictus Games in our own backyard,” City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said.
At a Council meeting on 20 February, Councillors unanimously voted to back Mayor Angelo Tsirekas’ plan to support the Invictus Games. This included a promotional program, fee waiver for the use of Five Dock Park, an information stall at Fred Kelly Place, and use of Council’s function space at The Connection, Rhodes.
“We are thrilled to throw our support behind these inspiring athletes and to promote the Games to our residents, businesses and visitors,” he said.
“As well as Council’s support, Club Five Dock RSL and the Five Dock RSL sub-branch are sponsoring the Italian team at this year’s Games, which includes hosting the Italian athletes, their families and carers alongside team dignitaries and coaches,” Mayor Tsirekas said.
Established in 2014 by His Royal Highness Prince Harry, the Invictus Games are an international multi-sport event in which wounded, injured or sick defence forces personnel and associated veterans take part in a variety of sports.
The Opening Ceremony will take place at the Sydney Opera House this Saturday, 20 October, with events to be staged from 20-27 October at Sydney Olympic Park and on and around Sydney Harbour.
“It is our pleasure to promote and support the hosting of participants of this year’s Games. All athletes competing in the Invictus Games are heroes two times over and it will be an honour to have them staying in our area.”
“Club Five Dock RSL (celebrating 70 years) and Five Dock RSL Sub-Branch (celebrating 100 years) are honoured to be working with the Sydney Invictus Games,” Robert Ridge, Club Five Dock RSL President said.
“The Club and Sub-Branch have had a close connection with veteran welfare for a very long time and having the opportunity to work with Invictus, in particular the Italian national team, due to our long connection with the Australian/Italian community in our local area.”
“The Club and Sub-Branch strong connection with our community will ensure the memory and sacrifices our veterans gave lives on.”
“We thank City of Canada Bay Council for their support in welcoming the Sydney Invictus Games.”
