Council seeks feedback on Activate Wollondilly 2020 Long-Term Bushfire Recovery & Resilience Plan

Wollondilly Council is seeking feedback on a Long-Term Recovery and Resilience Plan, to ensure that it meets the needs of the community following recent natural disasters including the Green Wattle Creek bushfire, flooding and Covid-19.The plan has been developed after an extensive period of consultation, including disaster recovery forums, monthly Local Recovery and Resilience Committee meetings, surveys and direct contact with fire affected residents and businesses. It was created under the ‘Activate Wollondilly’ framework, drawing on information collected after the June 2016 storm event which caused widespread damage across the Shire. The Activate Wollondilly framework is a Council-led approach to disaster management and preparedness, aimed at building resilient, informed communities ready to respond to and recover from natural and man-made disasters.Mayor Robert Khan said, “The Green Wattle Creek bushfire caused devastation to our Wollondilly community in the summer of 2019/2020, and was swiftly followed by a flooding event and Covid-19.”“Council is committed to supporting the community as it recovers from these events and we also want to make sure we are prepared for any future disasters.”The framework looks at how Council engages with the community, builds awareness of disaster management, preparedness and resilience, and improves cooperative responses between agencies. It ensures emergency management plans are living documents that are updated as lessons are learnt, mitigation strategies are identified and implemented and control measures are put in place ready for future events. As part of the Plan, Council has organised activities and projects to assist the Shire to become more resilient to disaster events.Head to yoursay.wollondilly.nsw.gov.au to give your feedback on the Long-Term Recovery and Resilience Plan.
