Thurgoona traffic the focus of engagement plan

Albury City Councillors have voted to adopt a stakeholder engagement plan that will help inform upgrade designs, with an initial focus on the precinct around Shuter Avenue and its intersection with Thurgoona Drive.

Two other precincts are slated for later upgrades as part of the full CBD project: Thurgoona Drive, from and including Diamond Drive to Evesham Place, and Table Top Road, from and including Diamond Drive to Thurgoona Drive.

Albury Mayor, Kevin Mack, said residents had specifically highlighted the Shuter Ave area as a key issue.

“Shuter Avenue is our first priority, as this area is currently the busiest in the Thurgoona CBD,” he said.

“We’ll be asking the community to tell us what they would like to see across the entire CBD precinct, including intersection upgrades, better public transport facilities, safer crossing points for people walking, and improved bike riding facilities.

“These solutions will be implemented over the next five years. “

Cr Mack said Council had heard regularly from the community regarding the barriers to walking and riding in Thurgoona.

“People have told us that they want to see improvements at busy intersections, safer road crossings, more walking connections between estates, more shared paths, upgraded bus stops and expanded bus routes and reduced traffic congestion at peak times,” he said.

“We need to ensure that any proposed initiatives meet the needs and expectations of the community.”

The engagement process, which will include face-to-face events and an online survey via Council’s ‘Have Your Say’ platform, is expected to kick off with a launch event in late January 2025.
