The City of Parramatta is celebrating a double win at the 2025 IPWEA NSW & ACT Annual Engineering Excellence Awards, taking home two prestigious awards.

PHIVE Community Cultural and Civic Hub and the new Alfred Street Pedestrian & Cyclist Bridge stood out among the best in engineering, sustainability and innovation, and were crowned winners in their respective categories.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said it is an enormous achievement to see two of our most ambitious projects recognised on the state’s biggest engineering stage.

“The Alfred Street Pedestrian Cyclist Walkway Bridge and PHIVE are not just engineering feats; they are landmarks that reflect our vision for a vibrant and connected Parramatta,” Cr Zaiter said.

“Both projects reflect what Parramatta is all about – a city that is smart, bold, connected and future-focused.

“These awards recognise outstanding public works across NSW and the ACT, and are a win for our City, our teams and our community, highlighting our dedication to creating spaces that inspire and connect.”

The Alfred Street Bridge, Australia's first true diagonal arch bridge, was recognised in the New or Improved Techniques category, and spans 82 metres across the Parramatta River.

The $19.22 million project, designed with sleek minimalism and structural excellence, was completed in October 2023, and sets a new benchmark for lightweight bridge engineering, linking key cycleways and pathways and helping over 13,000 people each month walk and ride with ease.

PHIVE, the $136 million community hub and smart building in Parramatta Square, designed by award-winning French architect Manuelle Gautrand, received the award in the Design and Construction of a Public Works Project – Projects Greater than $5m category.

PHIVE is a net-zero carbon building that houses the brand-new City of Parramatta Library, the new Council Chambers, creative spaces, and more notably, PHIVE achieved a 6 Star Green Star rating, highlighting its commitment to sustainability.
