Little Sellers Art Prize winners announced

Courtni Whittaker has won the 2020 Little Sellers Art Prize with her dynamic painting Different Places to Go and See.A finalist in the 13-15 age-group category, Courtni takes home $200 thanks to the generosity of Basil Sellers AM, who instigated the prize for young artists five years ago.Council’s arts coordinator Indi Carmichael said Little Sellers provided vital exhibition practise to emerging local artists.“This year’s theme was North, south, east, west…,” Ms Carmichael said.“Having to respond to a theme encourages aspiring artists to harness their imaginations, helping them develop into contemporary art makers of the future.“It’s been particularly gratifying to see the support from our schools this year; making use of our newly instigated teacher resources that accompanied this year’s call for entries.”Judge Carmel Cox remained undaunted while selecting her finalists, despite more than 200 entries this year.“Carmel’s experience and her practiced eye saw her select work that responded to the theme but also showed originality and technical skill,” Ms Carmichael said.Ms Cox also selected the winners in each age-group category, while the Children’s Services Award and the Youth Services Award winners, both sponsored by Eurobodalla Council and valued at $75, were chosen by the coordinators of those services.“Iona Kelly won the Children’s Services Award with her thought-provoking painting Travels in the Mind,” Ms Carmichael said.“The Youth Services Award went to The Adventurer’s Compass, by Makadde Ethel, another work exploring themes of travel and journey.”View the online announcement of finalists and browse their work at www.thebas.com.au
