Esplanade Lagoon to close for maintenance Published: 30 Apr 2020 The Cairns Esplanade Lagoon will undergo its biennial maintenance program from tomorrow (1 May) to ensure the city’s most iconic feature remains in top condition.The maintenance program will take six to eight weeks to complete and will include repairs and upgrades to the pool’s surface, lighting, pump systems and amenities.“The pool and its surrounds need major maintenance every two years to keep it looking and operating at its best,” Mayor Bob Manning said.“Without this maintenance, our lagoon wouldn’t be the star attraction that it is.”Maintenance works were originally scheduled to start in July, but have been brought forward as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.“Some works can’t be done while there is water in the pool, which means a full closure is needed,” Cr Manning said.“With the lagoon already closed due to health measures to stop the spread of coronavirus, it made sense to start earlier.”The lagoon will be drained on 4-5 May via a stormwater outlet.The maintenance program includes: Detailed survey of render faults and required rectificationRepairs to subsidence-related concrete damageSand replenishmentAmenities building repaintPipe work/pump repairs and valve overhaulsClean out of balance and backwash tanksCleaning and polishing of fish structuresGeneral signage renewal around lagoonLagoon timber deck repairs and treatingScheduled repairs to change rooms The amenities building will also be closed for the same period as the lagoon.
