Council provides new recycling disposal option for household batteries

Whitsunday Regional Council has launched a new and easy way for residents to dispose of general household batteries with recycling units now located at various locations across the region.
Mayor Andrew Willcox said Council is committed to ensuring the Whitsunday region continues to reuse and recycle and this initiative is designed to make it easier for residents to responsibly dispose of these common household wastes.
“Batteries contain harmful chemicals, so if disposed of incorrectly, can cause pollution, contaminate our landfills and pose a fire and explosion risk,” Mayor Willcox said.
“Most of us have general household batteries lying around the house and we don’t know how, or where to dispose of them correctly,” he said.
“It’s incredibly easy to recycle batteries and with today’s new technology, we can recover around 95% of the materials contained in a battery.
“We are really hoping these new, conveniently placed units will encourage more people to take up the opportunity to recycled.”
Recycling units are in place now at all Whitsunday Regional Libraries, Customer Service Centres and the Collinsville and Cannonvale Transfer Stations.
The Household Battery Recycling Program is being funded through the Queensland Government’s Regional Recycling Transport Assistance Package Program.
