30 local heroes nominated for Australia Day honours

The contributions and achievements of many outstanding residents have been recognised, with 30 nominations received for the 2019 Burdekin Shire Australia Day Awards.The awards include Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year, Junior and Senior Cultural Awards, Junior and Senior Sportsperson Awards, Sportsperson with a Disability, Sports Administrator Award, Lifetime Contribution Award, Senior Environment Award and Community Event of the Year.Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said the awards were the Burdekin’s way of acknowledging the recipients for their remarkable contributions to our community.“The Australia Day Awards are an opportunity for us to celebrate the many outstanding Burdekin residents who work tirelessly to make the region a better place to live,” she said.“One of the Burdekin’s biggest assets is the volunteer mindset and hard work of many people in our community- a strength that is not present in all regional towns.
