Dumped tyres and mattresses pollute our region – council urges community action Posted on January 10, 2025 Council continues to combat the widespread issue of illegal dumping, especially of bulky items such as tyres and mattresses. These items, often found along roadsides, in bushland, and around waste facilities, harm the local environment, pose health risks, and create cleanup costs that divert funds from essential community projects. General Manager Communities, Adrian Burns emphasised the impact of these actions. ‘Dumped items like tyres and mattresses aren’t just unsightly; they leach harmful chemicals into the environment and require extensive resources to clean up,’ he said. ‘Illegal dumping is a burden that affects every resident.’ Illegal dumping is particularly concerning when it involves non-biodegradable items such as tyres and mattresses.
