Myall Remembrance Park remembers local servicemen

Local servicemen and women of the Western Downs are never forgotten as Myall Remembrance Park continues to expand its Services Memorial wall.   The Myall Remembrance Park Services Memorial was unveiled in November 2015 and recognises fallen members of the Australian Defence Force or Australian Armed Services with bronze memorial plaques.  Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Parks, Open Spaces and Cemeteries Councillor Carolyn Tillman said Council was encouraging families of past Australian Armed Forces officers to apply for remembrance plaques for their loved ones.   “The Myall Remembrance Park is such a beautiful place of remembrance and the Services Memorial wall adds something extra special by paying tribute to our local servicemen and women,” Cr Tillman said.   “The remembrance wall is a wonderful asset to the community providing a beautiful area to reflect and honour those who have served our country.  “We are currently accepting applications for new plaques so if your fallen family member served in Australia’s Defence Force or Armed Services, I’d encourage you to consider applying for a plaque in their memory.”  Former Dalby local Carol Hoadley recognises the importance of remembering those in the local community who served in the armed forces.  “After my husband passed away, my daughter Jo and I visited the Dalby cemetery asking to install a remembrance plaque for him however we were told there wasn’t an area devoted to returned soldiers,” Mrs Hoadley said.   “I thought it would be nice to have a special memorial dedicated for those who served our country, so Jo and I wrote a letter to Council in 2011 about making something happen in the Remembrance Park.   “My husband served in Vietnam, so his plaque is really important to me and my family and I think’s it’s just as important that all fallen soldiers are recognised for the sacrifices they made.”  Applications for a memorial plaque are now open and will close Friday 14 August.  To find out more about applying for a plaque on the Myall Remembrance Park Services Memorial contact Council on 1300 COUNCIL (1300 268 624) or download the application form online at www.wdrc.qld.gov.au.   Western Downs Regional Council Media Office 07 4679 4265
