Cyclone repair works begin at Inverdon Bridge in Bowen

Works began this week to restore Inverdon Bridge in Bowen after it was significantly damaged during Cyclone Debbie last year.Whitsunday Regional Council will be replacing the damaged timber bridge with a new concrete bridge, with eligible works funded under the joint Commonwealth-State Natural Disaster Relief & Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).The bridge works are extensive, and construction is expected to be completed by mid-June 2019, weather permitting.Mayor Andrew Willcox said the new concrete bridge would ensure the creek crossing is up to the latest building standards and would be more likely to withstand extreme weather events in the future.“The new bridge will be a single-lane concrete bridge, replacing the old timber bridge which failed during the cyclone,” he said.“I’d like to thank the Commonwealth and State Governments for the funding to restore this vital infrastructure which connects our Bowen community.”The bridge works are expected to take approximately 6 months to be completed, and during this time there will be signage and traffic control in place for motorists. For more information on Disaster Recovery projects, visit Council’s website at https://www.whitsunday.qld.gov.au/569/Disaster-Recovery-Projects For media enquiries, contact: Joanne Hennessy, Engagement & Marketing Coordinator 07 4945 0614, 0428 954 467 or Email: [email protected]
