Celebrating the 125th anniversary of Women's Suffrage

In 1894, after decades of activism, women in South Australia were awarded the right to vote in general elections and stand as members of parliament. This landmark legislation—the first of its kind in Australia—represents an incredible achievement by men and women, giving both equal political rights and creating a huge step towards gender equality.Council are celebrating the 125th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage through a series of events that recognise the journey of those who paved the way and those who continue to make valuable contributions to our community.Hear from and meet inspirational local women, take in a special exhibition at Unley Museum and nominate your inspirational women to be recognised and celebrated.Unley Women of Influence: Past and Present: Wednesday 21 August A free panel discussion featuring four incredible women, featured in the above image, who are paving the way for future generations and inspiring us all along the way.Denise George: A Special Presentation: Thursday 19 September Denise George, author of Mary Lee, will discuss the compelling story of how this ‘turbulent anarchist’ took on the establishment and won, playing a pivotal role in women winning the right to vote.Unley for Equality Exhibition | Ongoing from Monday 18 September This free exhibition at Unley Museum throws light on the people of Unley who signed the petition in support of the Adult Suffrage Bill.Post It | Submissions close Monday 30 September This is your opportunity to nominate women of influence who should be recognised and celebrated by submitting photos, paintings or portraits.
