We are prioritising recycled content through our procurement process
The City of Charles Sturt is one of nine participating councils in the LGA’s Circular Procurement Pilot Project, who have jointly signed a memorandum of understanding.
Through this pilot project, the participating councils are seeking to combine their collective buying power to significantly increase demand for recyclable materials in South Australia.
In signing the MOU, the City of Charles Sturt is committing to:
Prioritising recycled content through our procurement process Tracking and publicly reporting on the amount (tonnes) of recycled content products and materials we are purchasing; and Adopting a target in relation to purchasing recycled plastic materials.Recent challenges in the waste and recycling sector, including the implementation of the China National Sword Policy and the collapse of SKM Recycling interstate, have created not only instability in the recycling sector but has also undermined public confidence in the sector.
The LGA Circular Procurement Pilot Project offers us the opportunity to ‘close the loop’ and support and enhance the local circular economy by prioritising the purchase of recycled-content materials and products. By developing strong local markets for recyclable material, we hope to send a clear message to industry that we are serious about recycling and also demonstrate to our community that we are taking responsibility for what happens to the contents of their yellow bin.
