Council investigating more Bush Camping

Yorke Peninsula Council is looking to add two new lakeside campgrounds to its Bush Camping system.

Council has identified spaces at Pink Lake and Lake Fowler – two key locations among the 200-odd salt lakes in the Yorketown area – that could be used as official campgrounds in the near future.

Both are along the Yorke Peninsula Salt Lake Trail, a tourist trail opened in 2021 which has resulted in increased visitation, including by recreational vehicles.

“The sites at our beautiful pink lakes are already attracting visitors, so providing them with somewhere to stay overnight will be a welcome move,” Mayor Darren Braund said.

“With changes planned following this summer to deal with overcrowding at our 19 existing Bush Camps, it is also timely to add more camping sites to accommodate the many people who enjoy visiting Yorke Peninsula for camping.

“The salt lake campgrounds may also be preferred by campers during winter as they are away from coastal conditions and the lakes can be stunning at that time of year.

“We welcome camping tourism, and want to ensure campers have an enjoyable time rather than being unable to find sites or being packed tightly into campgrounds.

“We also know that for tourism to thrive in the long term, we need to protect our coastal environment, and unfortunately overcrowding at peak times has caused environmental concerns in recent years.”
