From a Melbourne whiskey bar to Devonport Jazz

Like many bands, the story of how the Gianni Marinucci Trio got together is as interesting as the music they perform.

Gianni – an accomplished trumpeter, flugel-hornist and vocalist who is a highly sought after jazz musician and collaborates nationally and internationally -  tells the story about how he, guitarist Craig Fermanis and bassist Tom Lee had performed together in different bands and seen one another around the Melbourne jazz circuit for several years but only decided to form a trio one night in a whiskey bar.

“We were on the same wavelength, music-wise, and we have been together now for about four years,” he said.

“It is a trio which gets along very well. It is very warm, melodic and a really good groove.”

The trio will perform at Molly Malone’s Irish Pub, in Best Street, from 9 p.m. until 11.30 p.m. on Friday 26 July before backing up the following day for a Pure Jazz session between midday and 1 p.m. in the Aberdeen Room, Level 2, paranaple centre, 137 Rooke Street, Devonport.

Admission is free for the Friday night performance with meals served from 5.30 until 9.00. Meal bookings can be made by telephoning 6328 3367.

The Pure Jazz session is $20 per person, but free for Festival Pass holders. Bookings can be made by telephoning 6420 2900 or through the paranaple arts centre box office.

Gianni will sing on the Friday night, where the trio will perform many of the jazz standards while Saturday afternoon will purely be an instrumental show with a broad range of music from originals to works by Tom Waits

Appearing at the Festival is nothing new for Gianni, who often comes to the Coast to play with local jazz legend Viktor Zappner.

“I love it in Devonport and have been a few times. It is a very beautiful Festival.

“It is professional run, very accessible and does not feel elite.”

To be held from 25-28 July, this year’s Festival will be headlined by the great multi-instrumentalist James Morrison and is brimming with acts from Tasmania and the mainland, which will please both jazz lovers and the general public.

Other exciting elements of the Festival include the Squeezebox Cabaret (complete with a meal, dance troupe and big band), sensational traditional band The Syncopators, the RAN Jazz Ensemble Melbourne, the ABC Radio live broadcast, a schools’ tour and Pure Jazz Sessions.
