A record number of 234 entries has been received for the prestigious 2025 Burnie Print Prize.
“Since its inception in 2007, the renowned Burnie Print Prize has captured the attention of printmakers and artists across the country,” Teeny Brumby, Mayor of the City of Burnie said.
Weathering the storm of the pandemic, which was the death knell for numerous art prizes offered throughout the nation, Burnie Regional Art Gallery’s acquisitive Print Prize has thrived with the 2023 iteration of the Print Prize breaking previous records with 185 entries.
“This year’s entries have overshadowed all previous years, tallying a jaw-dropping 234 submissions from artists representing every state and territory in the country,” Mayor Brumby said.
Tasmanian artists also number highly, as do artists from the North-West coast.
A panel of four judges will select a shortlist of up to 80 works to be included in the 2025 Burnie Print Prize exhibition, with the $17,000 overall prize winner and $5,000 emerging artist prize winners to be announced at the official opening on Friday 14 March 2025.
“Held every two years since 2007, the acquisitive prize returns in 2025 with an increased prize purse and at an exciting time that will see the official reopening of the new Burnie Arts in March 2025, following the completion of a $20 million, two-year redevelopment project,” Burnie Arts Executive Manager Mark Viner said.
Burnie Print Prize 2025 invited printmakers and cross-disciplinary artists living and working in Australia to enter eligible works created in the two years prior to the final submission date of Sunday, 3 November 2024.
Shortlisted works will go on display in the newly refurbished Burnie Regional Art Gallery within Burnie Arts from 14 March until 17 May 2025, and will form part of both the cultural festival Ten Days on the Island, and a series of special celebrations re-launching Burnie Arts after its extensive redevelopment.
