The 2024-25 fire danger period will commence on Monday, 25 November and now is the time to begin preparing your property if you haven’t already.
Colac Otway Shire is located in one of the world’s most fire prone landscapes and the National Council for Fire and Emergency Services have advised that the southwest region of Victoria is facing an increased risk of fire compared to recent years.
Successful fire prevention can only be achieved by all landholders taking measures to ready their property for the fire danger period.
Each year Colac Otway Shire Council conducts fire hazard inspections on properties throughout the shire with the 2024 inspections having commenced this month. By carrying out maintenance and clean up works you can help reduce the risk from bushfire and grassfire - working together, we can improve the safety for ourselves and those around us.
Key areas Council officers will be assessing include:
Maintaining grass to below 10 cm; Removing the build-up of fire fuels around houses and assets (including in gutters and along verandas); Reducing other potential flammable hazards close to your house or neighbouring assets.Information on preparing your home and protecting the community against fire this coming season can be found on Council’s website at: www.colacotway.vic.gov.au/My-property/Fire-and-emergencies/Getting-fire-ready
The VicEmergency website http://emergency.vic.gov.au/prepare/ also has details on other things you can do to help protect your property including links to further information about fire prevention, developing fire plans and understanding emergency warnings.
If you are having trouble or need some assistance in carrying out the requested works or would like more information about fire prevention activities in the Colac Otway Shire please contact Council’s Emergency Management Officer (Fire Prevention) on 5232 9400.
