Statement from the Town of Cottesloe

Carpark No. 1 retaining wall – foreshore closures in place

The Town would like to provide an update regarding the area of retaining wall/grass terrace currently closed to public access due to safety concerns. Cracks have been found in this section of the retaining wall on the foreshore at Cottesloe Main Beach (in front of Carpark No. 1).

The Town is committed to maintaining a safe and enjoyable foreshore for all visitors and will be undertaking required remedial works to the limestone retaining wall. Procurement for the works is currently underway, and in the interest of public safety, the temporary access restrictions will remain in place. This includes the continued fencing off of the affected area, along with additional measures to facilitate pedestrian access.

To ensure the safety of visitors, the stairs from Carpark No. 1 (on the southern side), along with a section of footpath and grass terrace, will be temporarily closed. A temporary pedestrian pathway will be installed, utilising some car parking bays, with access ramps and safety bollards in place.

Whilst we understand that the timing is unfortunate, we need to take this action due to safety concerns.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time. While this small section of the foreshore remains restricted, beach access continues to be available via multiple alternative routes and the Town is prioritising these works to ensure they are completed as soon as possible. We will continue to provide updates as the project progresses.

The 35th annual Rottnest Channel Swim on Saturday 22 February is going ahead - these closures will have minimal impact on the event. We encourage you to come along and see the swim in action, it’s a fantastic morning on the beach!
