At the Shire of Coolgardie’s March Ordinary Meeting of Council, acting CEO Aaron Cook presented the Annual Budget review for 2024/2025 as an agenda item. The review presented a clear, concise and honest account of the Shire’s current financial position, acknowledged the Shire’s difficult current situation, and offered a roadmap for the future.
The review highlights a projected deficit figure, areas of variance and a list of considerations that aim to bring the organisation back to a standard level of operational stability and sustainably. The considerations include increasing revenue, securing additional grant funding, reducing costs, managing debt, and reviewing service levels. Council acknowledges these changes are challenging, but they are essential for creating a stronger and financially stable future for the community. We accept that this process will take time.
Significant cost-saving measures since Mr Cook’s arrival in mid-November, including project cancellations, have helped limit the projected deficit. Unfortunately, many losses remain beyond Mr Cook and Council’s control due to market conditions and external factors
Shire of Coolgardie Council acknowledges the concerns of our community and is committed to providing further clarity and transparency.
Shire President Malcolm Cullen stated, “Council recognises that the current financial situation has caused concern, and we want our community to know we are working diligently to get to where we want to be. We are making the necessary decisions to rectify the situation”
"On behalf of Council, I extend our appreciation to Acting CEO Aaron Cook for his leadership and dedication in guiding us through this difficult period. His commitment to identifying solutions and implementing necessary reforms has been invaluable."
"We also want to express our gratitude to the residents and businesses of the Shire for their understanding as we navigate these challenges.”
“We appreciate your patience and support for Shire staff as they work through these issues and continue to serve the community.”
