Spotlight on Volunteer: Steve’s Commitment to Conservation

Published on 28 March 2025

Steve Lofthouse’s journey with Friends of Bold Park Bushland began with the values instilled by his parents. Raised in a household where volunteering was second nature, Steve naturally embraced the practice. Over time, he found fulfilment in contributing to the local community through this group, which is committed to preserving the unique bushland of Bold Park.

Established in 1987 to protect the park from a proposed housing development, Friends of Bold Park Bushland has played a key role in conserving this ecologically diverse space. As the largest bushland area within Perth’s urban region, Bold Park features a variety of ecosystems that support a wide range of plant and animal life. In recent years, visitor numbers have tripled, underscoring the park’s growing importance as a natural refuge for both locals and tourists.

Now serving as President of the group, Steve has been an active volunteer for many years. He enjoys the opportunity to connect with nature while taking part in hands-on bushcare, often encountering flora and fauna not easily seen otherwise. A highlight of his volunteering experience has been meeting like-minded individuals who share his passion for the environment. These connections have led to lasting friendships and collaborative projects, including the development of new environmental initiatives.

Like many volunteers, Steve balances his involvement with other responsibilities, including administrative tasks. His advice for those with limited time is: “Look for opportunities where you can turn up on the day. It’s a great way to start”. He encourages people to focus on manageable, short-term commitments that can still make a meaningful impact.

Looking ahead, Friends of Bold Park Bushland has a number of initiatives planned. Community-guided walks will continue, offering a great way to learn more about the park and its history. Weeding activities will resume in May, and in late March, the Bold Ideas series will feature a community talk on microplastics.

Steve encourages anyone considering volunteering to follow their interests: “Think about what interests you most and look for opportunities that align with that. When you’re doing something you love, it won’t feel like work”.

Volunteering with Friends of Bold Park Bushland offers a rewarding way to give back to the community and support local environmental conservation.
